If you just showed a breast it would be matter-of-fact, underlining the world these men live in. This is supposed to make things look like video with identifying features removed, I suppose, but ironically the effect is nearly pornographic. When someone dies, or when a character is naked, parts of their body are replaced with large pixels obscuring the details. It's almost a little too much to take-is Shanghai really hiding 50 gun-toting gangsters around every corner? Streams of enemies come at you constantly, from what feels like every direction. Before you know it, armies of people are trying to kill you. Kane and Lynch begin the game in Shanghai trying to shake down a low-level thug, and things quickly go bad. The game feels like it doesn't want to be played, and tests you by asking how long you'll endure it. That could have been on purpose, as some sort of statement, but the end result was a feeling of claustrophobia and discomfort.
It also doesn't help that the game's presentation rubs your nose in the ugliness of its world. I didn't want them to win, and I certainly didn't want to be them. As I fought wave after wave of thugs and law enforcement, my main thought was simply that it would be better if both Kane and Lynch took bullets to the head. Kane and Lynch 2 features unlikable men doing things I don't agree with, in a place I don't want to be. When it comes to games, I'm not sure we extend ourselves the same courtesy.

Do games need to be fun to be successful? Think about it: we give films the freedom to depress us even though we still enjoy the movie on many levels.
